Coppice Worker Vacancy

Leeds Coppice Workers are looking for someone passionate about sustainable, low impact woodland management, to join our team. The role will involve assisting with all the practical aspects of coppice management, firewood and charcoal production as well as working with volunteers, hedgelaying and coppice crafts. We are open to recruiting someone as a member of the co-op on a permanent basis or as a temporary worker for the coming coppice season (Oct – Apr).

This job will suit you if you are used to being outside in all weathers, have some experience working with hand tools and have an interest in woodland management. You will need to be good at working in a team, using initiative and being adaptable to changing plans.

Responsibilities

  • Felling coppice in a safe and efficient manner 
  • Creating a number of different coppice products to a high standard using bill hook and pruning saw
  • Assisting the team on volunteer days as needed
  • Extracting firewood from managed woodland and other site
  • Moving firewood with truck and trailer safely and efficiently to LCW Wood yard
  • Filling firewood sacks and delivering to customers
  • Hedge laying 
  • Processing firewood between May and September including sawing, splitting and transporting logs
  • Charcoal making including preparing timber for charcoal kilns, lighting and supervision of kilns, grading and filling charcoal bags, making deliveries to charcoal customers.

  • Attending co-op meetings
  • The opportunity to take on internal roles i.e. social media, volunteer coordination & tool maintenance. 
  • Assisting with administration including replying to LCW emails and contributing to stock/order sheets.

Details

Location > We work at various sites in and around Leeds, your own transport is desirable but not essential

Hours > 24 hrs over 3 days Mon-Fri

> Workday is 8am-4pm in the woods, travel is outside of these times. For non drivers the truck leaves from LS7 around 7:15am (depending on site), other lifts may be available.

Type of contract > Permanent for co-op member or fixed term for temporary worker.

Pay > £10.42 per hour (+2 hrs pay per day using own chainsaw)

Closing date > 4th Sept

Interview date > 11th and 12th Sept (provisional)

We then hope to do a practical follow up with some interviewees on the 18th or 19th Sept.
