Bramhope wood is a (privately owned) ancient, semi natural woodland situated on Pool Bank. It has been unmanaged for a number of years and as a result has a very dense tree canopy that is dominated by very overstood coppiced sycamore stools that provides insufficient light to the forest floor. The site has many ancient woodland indicators including sphagnum mossess and native bluebells.
With the help of Betty’s Trees for Life Fund, Leeds Coppice Workers have been coppicing the overstood sycamore and deer fencing areas to protect the regrowth of said stools, and allow for natural regeneration. The primary objective is to increase the biodiversity and tree density of the woodlands to provide increased native habitat and pollution buffer from the busy A658. As the woodlands are steep with a very thick layer of humus we called in the help from local Horse logger, Airedale Woodsman who’s horses enabled us to extract the timber in the most sustainably sound way.
A big thank you to Bramhope Primary School who helped with the restocking.
