Coppicing is GO!
For the last few weeks Leeds Coppice Workers have been out coppicing at Townclose Hills. Unusually for the Leeds area these woods are in-rotation coppice. This means that they were cut 8-9 years ago and so the material is a good size for many of the coppice products we supply, such as bean poles/ hedging stakes/ pea sticks/ hurdle rods. As part of our long term commitment to improving the quality of the woodland we are doing lots of layering of stools to improve the density of trees. This is the traditional approach to tree propagation and is a very successful way of getting new trees from the existing stock within the wood. So no need to non local seed or plant nurseries.
Last years cut has regrown brilliantly with pretty much no animal browsing. This is great news for the future because were already getting excited about cutting it again in 8 years time!

Townclose Woods Coppicing, Kippax
Leeds coppice workers have been busy coppicing some really nice mixed coppice in these woods. The material is the right age so we have been getting lots of bean poles, hedging stakes and hurdle rods out. Its a beautiful place and because the coppice is in its 2nd cycle of management the ground fauna is going to be amazing come spring. We are going to be doing allot of layering of the hazel and elm, hoping to at least triple the stool density and make it one of Yorkshires finest coppices!
Woodpile is looking healthy
Thanks to the good weather this summer nearly all our wood is extracted from our coppice coups. A large chunk of that is now processed into firewood ready for delivery..
A New Workers Co-operative for Leeds
Leeds Coppice Workers is a workers co-operative providing locally and ethically sourced firewood and charcoal and committed to restoring and managing neglected and underused woodlands in the Leeds area using the best sustainable forestry practices.
We aim to create jobs in leeds woodlands for our members and to promote the use of locally and ethically sourced woodland products, including firewood, within the Leeds area. We also aim to reintegrate local people to their woodlands, show how woodland can be managed in sustainable and ecologically sound ways and to train and share skills in woodland related activities.
