Fascines are 5ft long by 1ft diameter bundles of brushwood that are tied together with natural Sisal twine that can be staked to the ground to create barriers and defences to combat land erosion caused by rainfall and flooding.
Fascine installation offers a low-cost, low-impact bioengineering technique that also
provides a paradigm of other ecosystem services. They capture sediment and organic
matter and eventually become embedded in the bank or slope, consolidating it.
As well as combating river bank erosion facine installation;
• Benefit the appearance of the waterways
• Creates habitat for wildlife, especially during floods
• Cleans water of Nitrates, which have serious negative implications for aquatic life
• Slow the surface water run off off there by reducing flood risk
• Facine creation is also be a huge benefit to the local woodlands in which they were
made. Helping LCW achieve management and conservation goals across Leeds
woodland.
Leeds Coppice Workers can create and install Fascines for any number of different objectives. We have worked with a number of different clients including Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Wildlife trust.
